Description
A carved stone corbel depicting a winged angel holding a stringed instrument diagonally across its chest. The instrument has a rounded body and a long, narrow neck, resembling a lute or a related instrument. One hand grips the neck while the other rests across the body. The angel’s head tilts to one side, with flowing hair framing the face. A long robe falls in deeply carved folds, with wings on either side and foliage beneath the figure.
Condition
The angel, instrument and principal folds of the robe remain recognisable. The facial features are worn, with a conspicuous pale patch around the lower face. The stone shows uneven discolouration, small pits and chipped edges, particularly around the wings and foliage. Fine details of the strings and fingers are difficult to distinguish. Cobwebs are visible beside the carving.
