CH3 – E – Chancel/Choir Bay 3 East Side

←Back to photo map

Description

A wooden carving of an apparently female head attached to the chancel cross beam. The face is framed by a folded headdress or veil, with broad bands sweeping around the forehead and cheeks. Leaf-like ornament surrounds the upper and outer edges. Seen from below, the head turns slightly to one side. No inscription or identifying attribute is visible.

Condition

The face and folds of the headdress remain discernible, although the photograph’s viewing angle and softness limit the finer detail. The wood has an uneven, dusty surface, with small pale marks and local discolouration. Cobwebs cross the face and surrounding ornament, obscuring some edges. Some irregularities may be wear or small losses, but their extent cannot be established confidently from this photograph.
