Description

A carved wooden ceiling boss depicting a swan with a long curved neck, its head lowered towards its body and one wing raised. The bird occupies the ceiling boss filled with curling foliage. Pale colouring survives on the swan, with subdued ochre, reddish-brown and darker tones on the surrounding ornament. It may represent the Buckingham swan, derived from the Bohun family’s swan badge. The swan appears to wear a crown-shaped collar around its neck, a feature consistent with the suggested identification as a Bohun-derived swan badge. Association with a particular individual remains uncertain.

Condition

The boss retains its overall form, and the swan and surrounding foliage remain recognisable. The painted surfaces appear worn and uneven, with patches of colour surviving across the carving. Fine details are difficult to assess from floor level. The present photograph has been cropped and digitally sharpened, and some apparent surface detail may reflect that processing. A closer, higher-resolution photograph is needed to document the surviving paint and carving more reliably.
