Description
A painted and gilded wooden angel holding a blue shield bearing the merchant mark of William Swayne, who financed the building of this chapel. Swayne’s mark is carefully constructed: a triangle, for uprightness and rectitude in business, a cross, proclaiming faith and divine blessing on his trade, and, at the base, a pair of compasses — a merchant’s tool, but also forming the letter W for William.
Condition
Restored and renewed in 2025, the figure is substantially intact and its principal details remain clearly visible. There is noticeable wear and loss to the painted surface of the face, especially around the mouth and chin, together with smaller areas of wear to the gilding and shield. The colours and decorative forms nevertheless remain readily legible.
