Description
Winged angel with outstretched wings, positioned at the north end of the east side of SA1. The figure holds an open rectangular object, apparently a book, in front of the body. Surviving painted decoration is visible on the face, clothing and wings.
Heraldry
No heraldic shield is present. The object held by the angel appears to be an open book; any painted or incised detail on it should be recorded cautiously from closer examination.
Condition
The carving survives substantially complete, including both wings, head, torso, arms and the object held in front. The painted surface is worn and abraded, with surviving colour on the face, clothing and wings. No obvious major structural loss is visible in the supplied photograph.
Interpretation
This figure forms part of the series of carved angels attached to the timbers of the South Aisle ceiling. Unlike SA1-E2, its principal attribute appears to be an open book rather than a heraldic shield. The book may provide an iconographic clue, but no specific identification should be assigned without further comparative evidence.
