Description

A carved wooden angel with dark, shoulder-length hair and spread feathered wings holds a pointed shield. The figure wears a red robe with a blue-green collar. On the shield’s pale ground, a broad red chevron appears between three red roundels, two above and one below. Portions of darker edging survive beside the chevron. Both hands clasp the lower sides of the shield.

Heraldry

Tentative blazon: Argent, two chevrons between three roundels Gules.

In plain English: A pale or silver field bearing two red chevrons between three red roundels, two above and one below. This reading is provisional because extensive paint loss and abrasion have made parts of the design indistinct. No identification is proposed.

Identification: RCHME: Argent, a chevron between 3 roses gules; Buckeridge: Argent a chevron gules between three torteaux.

Condition

Extensive paint losses affect the face, collar, red robe and shield. A large irregular area of loss runs down the shield’s centre, interrupting the chevron and lower roundel; fine cracks are also visible across its surface. The lower point is rough and pitted. Both wings retain their feather outlines but show splits, chipped edges and circular holes or fixing points. The hands are worn, with much of their surface colour lost.
