Description
A carved and painted half-length angel with outspread wings, dark shoulder-length hair and a red garment. The angel faces forward and holds a pointed shield in front of the body. The wings retain traces of ochre or gilded colouring, and the facial features remain clearly defined despite substantial loss of paint.
Heraldry
Tentative blazon: Argent, two chevrons between three roundels Gules.
In plain English: A pale or silver field bearing two red chevrons between three red roundels, two above and one below.
This reading is provisional because extensive paint loss and abrasion have made parts of the design indistinct. No identification is proposed.
Condition
The carving appears substantially complete, including both wings and the shield. The painted surface is heavily worn, flaked and abraded, especially on the face, garment and shield. The shield design remains broadly legible, although parts of the chevrons and roundels are fragmentary. The wings preserve uneven remnants of ochre or gilded finish. There is a small hole or fixing mark at the upper centre of the garment above the shield, together with minor surface losses and cracking consistent with age.
