Description
A carved and painted half-length angel with outspread wings and long, wavy hair. The angel faces forward, wears a brown garment with a dark green collar and supports a pointed shield with both hands. The wings are carefully carved and retain extensive pale colouring, while paint also survives on the face, hair, clothing and shield.
Heraldry
Tentative blazon: Argent, a fess Sable between three birds close Sable, on the fess an annulet Argent.
In plain English: A white or silver field bearing a black horizontal band between three black standing birds, two above and one below. A white or silver ring is set upon the black band.
The principal arrangement is clear, but the species of the birds cannot be determined confidently from the surviving painted forms. The central charge appears to be an annulet, although local wear makes its outline imperfect. No identification is proposed.
Condition
The carving appears substantially complete, including both wings, the hands and the shield. The painted decoration is comparatively well preserved, although worn, flaked and abraded on the face, garment, wings and shield. The heraldic design remains readily legible, with local losses affecting the birds and the annulet. A vertical split runs through the lower centre and point of the shield. Minor chips, holes, cracking and surface loss are otherwise consistent with age.
