Description
Winged angel with outstretched wings, holding a heraldic shield. The figure is frontal, with both hands resting at the upper sides of the shield. The shield retains a red field with a repeated pale vertical motif. Surviving painted decoration is visible on the figure, wings and shield.
Heraldry
The shield is predominantly red and bears a repeated pale vertical device. The precise heraldic charge cannot be identified with confidence from the present photograph. Closer examination and comparison with other shields in the ceiling may clarify the design.
Condition
The carving appears substantially intact in this view. The painted surface is worn and abraded, with losses on the figure, wings and shield, but significant colour remains. This is a photographic condition note only, not a conservation assessment.
Interpretation
One of the principal angel figures associated with the west side of SA1. The surviving shield decoration is more legible than on some neighbouring figures, but its heraldic identity should remain open pending closer examination and comparison.
Location / numbering
SA1-W = South Aisle, compartment 1, west side, principal figure (W1). In the SA1 compartment plan, the east side has E1, E2 and E3; the west side has W1.
