Description
A carved and painted half-length angel shown frontally, with shoulder-length dark hair and a dark garment. No wings are clearly visible. The figure holds a large pointed heraldic shield in both hands.
Heraldry
Blazon: Argent, a chevron Gules.
In plain English, a white or silver shield bearing a red chevron.
The design is simple and clearly legible, although the colours are faded and worn. No identification with a particular family should be proposed without supporting historical or heraldic evidence.
Condition
The figure is substantially complete, including the face, body, hands and shield. The facial features are heavily worn and much of the painted decoration has been lost. The shield is comparatively well preserved, with its pale field and red chevron remaining readily legible. There is surface abrasion, discolouration and minor cracking throughout, together with local losses around the hands and edges of the carving.
