Description
A carved and painted half-length figure with a frontal head and dark shoulder-length hair. No wings are visible. The figure wears a pale garment and holds a pointed shield divided quarterly. Two quarters show a pale interlaced lattice on a red ground; the alternate quarters have a pale ermine field charged with a red chevron.
Heraldry
Provisional blazon: Quarterly, first and fourth Gules fretty Argent; second and third Ermine, a chevron Gules.
In plain English: The shield is divided into four. The first and fourth quarters have a white or silver interlaced lattice on red; the second and third have a white ermine field bearing a red chevron.
The quarterly arrangement and principal devices are clearly visible, but the faded colouring makes some tinctures provisional. The interlaced design is described as fretty, and the small dark marks on the pale quarters are interpreted as ermine spots. No identification is proposed.
Condition
The figure is substantially complete, including the head, hands and shield. The face retains good definition, while the garment and shield show widespread rubbing, scratches and local paint loss. Enough red, pale and dark pigment survives for the quartered design to remain readily legible. Minor cracking, small holes and general age-related surface wear are present.
