Description
A carved and painted half-length figure with an upward-looking face and dark shoulder-length hair. Wing-like carved forms rise behind the head. The figure wears a pale garment and holds a pointed shield divided vertically into two coats. The left half as viewed has a red field bearing a broad dark green or black Y-shaped charge. The other half has a pale field marked with small dark spots and bearing a red chevron.
Heraldry
Provisional blazon: Impaled: dexter, Gules, a pall Vert or Sable; sinister, Ermine, a chevron Gules.
In plain English: Two coats of arms are combined side by side. The first appears to show a dark Y-shaped figure on red. The second has a white or silver ermine field bearing a red chevron.
The vertical division and the design on the sinister half are reasonably clear. The precise colour and heraldic character of the Y-shaped charge are less certain, so this part of the blazon must remain provisional. No family identification is proposed.
Condition
The carving is substantially complete, including the head, hands and shield. Considerable painted decoration survives on the shield, garment and supporting timber. The surface nevertheless shows widespread abrasion, small holes, cracking and areas of paint loss. The ermine marks are fragmentary, and the colours of the other half have faded and darkened. Both component designs remain broadly readable.
