Description
Winged angel on the north side of NA2, holding a heraldic shield. The figure has a frontal head and torso, with the face turned slightly upwards. Broad gilded wings extend to either side. The hands are largely concealed behind the shield.
Heraldry
The surviving colours and traces of ornament suggest that the shield may originally have displayed the quartered royal arms of France and England. A blue quarter and a red quarter containing indistinct gold forms remain visible, but the lower part of the shield is too worn for a reliable complete blazon.
Condition
The carving remains substantially intact, including the head, torso, wings and shield. Much of the gilding survives on the wings, although it is worn and darkened in places. The face and clothing show paint loss and abrasion. The shield is particularly depleted, with extensive loss of its painted surface, especially across the lower half.
