Description

A carved stone corbel depicting a bearded male figure beneath a stepped moulding. Long hair falls on either side of the face, and a band or headdress crosses the forehead. The eyes, nose, moustache and beard remain discernible. A hand rests across the lower part of the figure, beneath an area of worn carving whose original form is unclear. No wings or identifying inscription are visible, and the figure’s identity is uncertain.

Condition

The carving is substantially worn, particularly below the face, where much of the original detail is difficult to distinguish. The hair, beard and fingers retain some definition. The surface is unevenly coloured, with pale patches, darker deposits, scattered pits and small losses. The ornament immediately beneath the upper moulding is chipped and partly obscured by cobwebs. The photograph’s greenish lighting also affects the apparent colour of the stone.
