Description
A carved stone corbel depicting a winged angel holding a shield against the chest. Long, wavy hair surrounds the face, and the wings have rows of overlapping feather-like forms. One hand rests across the shield’s upper side, while the other supports it from the opposite side. Deep folds articulate the sleeves and robe. Foliage decorates the base, and a stepped moulding crowns the corbel. No recognisable heraldic design is visible on the shield.
Condition
The wings, hair, hands and robe folds retain substantial detail, although the facial features are worn and partly obscured by dark surface colouring. The shield has extensive pale patches and an uneven surface, without a legible heraldic pattern. The lower edge of the corbel is particularly rough and pitted, with small losses and chips. Uneven lighting gives the photograph a greenish cast on one side and a warmer cast on the other
