Description
A carved stone corbel depicting a winged angel holding a small portable organ, or portative organ. Its graduated pipes rise from a rectangular box in front of the figure, with the tallest pipes beside the angel’s face. The angel wears a flowing robe, with long hair framing the head and upright wings on either side. Carved foliage forms the lower part of the corbel.
Condition
The carving retains recognisable wings, drapery and organ pipes, although the face and hands are worn and difficult to distinguish. A conspicuous dark line runs from the upper edge through the face, apparently following a crack or joint. The surface has scattered pits, small chips and uneven discolouration, with a pale patch on the right wing. Fine details of the instrument’s playing mechanism are unclear.
