Description

A carved stone corbel depicting a winged angel apparently playing bagpipes. A rounded bag is held against the body, with a slender pipe extending towards the mouth and another projecting diagonally downwards. The hands are positioned around the instrument. The angel wears a long, flowing robe, with wings rising on either side and foliage beneath the figure. The corbel supports a timber member of the chancel ceiling.

Condition

The overall figure, wings and drapery remain clear, and the principal features of the musical instrument can still be distinguished. The face is worn, with little surviving definition. The surface shows uneven discolouration, small pits and chips, and softened detail around the hands and foliage. The photograph does not resolve every part of the instrument sufficiently to make its identification certain.
