Description
A wooden carving on the western timber of Bay CH6 depicting an inverted human face. Long, wavy locks frame the head, and a bone-shaped object is held horizontally across the mouth. The eyes, nose and mouth are carved in relief within a roughly rectangular surround. The photograph preserves the upside-down orientation in which the face appears on the ceiling. Its meaning is uncertain.
Condition
The face, flowing hair and bone-shaped object remain readily recognisable. The wood is darkened and weathered, with numerous small holes and several visible splits. A pronounced crack crosses the right-hand end of the bone-shaped object in the photograph. Small patches of lighter material or surface finish remain in places. The surrounding timber also shows cracks and worn surfaces; the photograph cannot establish whether any insect damage is active.
