Description
Painted and gilded wooden angel with outstretched wings, positioned at the junction of the decorated roof timbers. The angel holds a white shield bearing the red cross of St George, England’s patron saint.. The figure has dark wavy hair, a gilded robe with a red-edged neckline, and gilded wings. It is set against the Lady Chapel’s strongly coloured red, blue, black and white roof decoration.
Condition
Restored and renewed in 2025, the figure is clearly legible and appears substantially intact. The painted and gilded surfaces show some visible wear, small losses and unevenness, particularly on the robe, wings and shield. The facial features and the red cross on the shield remain clear, and the overall decorative scheme is readily readable.
