Description
Winged angel holding an open book. The figure has outstretched wings, tightly curled hair and a frontal head and torso. The book contains rows of painted horizontal marks representing text, with a red and gold rosette or decorated initial at the top of the left-hand page. Substantial blue, red and dark painted decoration survives on the figure and wings.
Condition
The carving appears substantially intact, including the head, torso, hands, wings and open book. Considerable painted decoration survives, particularly on the blue garment and dark wings. The face, hands and book show surface wear, flaking and abrasion. The painted lines on the pages remain visible, although they do not form a clearly legible text.
