Description
Winged angel on the west side of NA1, holding a heraldic shield. The figure has outstretched wings and a frontal head and torso, and appears to wear a dark hood or close-fitting headdress. Surviving green, red, dark and pale painted decoration remains on the figure, wings and shield.
Heraldry
Provisional blazon: Per pale Gules and Sable, a harp [Or/Sable]
In plain English: The shield is split down the center into two vertical halves. The left half (from the viewer’s perspective) is red and the right half is black. A harp is centred over the split in the middle of the shield. (If specified as Or, the harp is gold/yellow; if Sable, it is black).
Condition
The carving appears substantially intact, including the head, torso, hands, wings and shield. Painted decoration survives extensively, but the face, clothing and wings show surface loss and abrasion. The shield is particularly worn, with extensive scratching and loss obscuring much of the central charge. A small circular hole is present near its lower point.
