Description

Unlike all the other ceiling bays at St Thomas’s, Bay 4 has a figure carved in the centre of the central boss – the image of the bottoms of two feet, These represent Christ’s feet viewed from below as he ascends into heaven.

This is most fully described in Acts 1:9–11: “When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Condition

The central boss retains its carved floral surround and traces of green, cream and red paint. The surface is worn, with flaking paint and areas of exposed wood. Detail within the central roundel is difficult to distinguish in the available photograph. The displayed image is an AI-assisted enlargement and should not be used to assess fine carving or surface damage; a closer photograph is needed for a fuller condition assessment.
