Description
Winged angel on the east side of NA4, holding a painted shield. The figure has outstretched wings and a frontal head and torso. Surviving painted decoration remains on the figure, wings and shield.
Iconography
The shield appears to depict the Five Wounds of Christ. A red heart occupies the centre, with wounded hands above and feet below.
This devotional emblem represents the wounds received by Christ at the Crucifixion.
Condition
The carving appears substantially intact, including the head, torso, wings and shield. Painted decoration survives extensively, although there is visible surface wear, fading and loss, particularly on the shield.
