Description
Winged angel on the west side of NA4, holding a painted shield. The figure has outstretched wings, a frontal head and torso, and substantial surviving painted decoration.
Iconography
The shield displays the Shield of the Trinity, a diagram expressing the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are each identified as God, but are distinguished from one another by connecting bands and inscriptions.
The surviving lettering appears to include forms of the Latin words Pater, Filius, Spiritus Sanctus, Deus, est and non est.
Condition
The carving appears substantially intact, including the head, torso, wings and shield. Much of the painted design and lettering survives, although there is surface wear, fading and localised loss. Some letters remain difficult to read and should be interpreted cautiously.
