Description
A carved and painted half-length angel with outspread wings and a frontal head and torso. The angel looks slightly upwards and holds a pointed shield in front of the body. Substantial painted decoration survives on the shield, wings and surrounding timbers.
Heraldry
Tentative blazon: Gules, a saltire Argent.
In plain English: A white or silver diagonal cross on a red field.
The design is clearly visible, but no identification is proposed.
Condition
The carving appears substantially complete, including the head, torso, hands, wings and shield. Considerable colour survives, although the painted surface is worn, chipped and abraded. There are localised losses on the face, garment, wings and shield, together with minor cracking and surface damage consistent with age.
