Description
A carved and painted half-length angel with outspread wings, dark shoulder-length hair and a frontal head and torso. The angel holds a pointed shield in front of the body. The shield bears a prominent red upright cross on a pale field, and traces of red and ochre colouring survive on the wings and garment.

Tentative blazon: Argent, a cross Gules.
In plain English: A red upright cross on a white or silver field.
This is the familiar form of the cross of St George, although the design alone does not establish that identification with certainty.
Condition
The carving appears substantially complete, including the head, torso, hands, wings and shield. The cross remains clear and strongly coloured. Painted decoration on the face, garment and wings is more worn, with widespread abrasion, fading and localised loss. Minor cracking and small surface defects are visible, particularly around the shield and the tips of the wings.
