Description

A forward-facing painted half-length figure at the west beam junction of Bay PV3. It has shoulder-length dark hair, a pale garment with blue collar and gold-coloured roundels, and hands grasping a pointed shield. The shield has horizontal pale bands on a dark field and three pale roundels aligned across its upper dark section.

Heraldry

Blazon: Sable, two bars Argent, in chief three plates.

Plain English: A black shield bearing two horizontal silver or white bands, with three silver or white discs arranged across the top. In heraldry, silver roundels are called plates.

These are the arms of the Hungerford family. The surviving black paint has a bluish appearance, but the heraldic tincture is sable (black). The identification is supported by records describing the Hungerford arms precisely as “Sable, two bars Argent, in chief three plates.”

Identification: RCHME: Hungerford; Buckeridge: HUNGERFORD Others blank, missing or inaccessible.

Condition

The head, hands and shield are intact, and the simple shield design is clear. The face and garment have small chips and rubbing, while the shield’s pale bands show fine cracks and scattered dirt or paint loss. Some wear exposes wood in the striped beam immediately behind the figure. The three roundels remain conspicuous.
