SA1-E1 — South Aisle Bay 1 East Side, 1st Figure

← Back to photo map

Description

A carved wooden angel with spread, feathered wings holds an open book in both hands. The figure has dark curling hair, a reddish painted face and a robe retaining blue-green colour around the neckline. Black lettering survives on the pale pages, including “John” on the left-hand page; the chapter number and remaining text cannot yet be read confidently. Above the head are paired carved forms resembling hanging drapery, beside a painted central moulding.

Condition

The figure retains substantial traces of paint, but these are worn and patchy, with exposed wood visible on the face, robe, wings and book. Cracks and separations are visible in the wings and the carving above the head. Small circular holes or possible fixing points are also visible. The book’s painted surface has extensive losses interrupting the lettering, although several words and numbered lines survive. The photograph preserves these features without digital reconstruction.
