Description
Winged angel with outstretched wings at the south position on the east side of SA1. The figure faces forward and holds a rectangular object in front of the body. Surviving painted decoration is visible on the face, clothing, wings and the object held.
Heraldry
No clearly identifiable heraldic shield or charge can be established from the master photograph. The rectangular object requires closer examination before it is classified with confidence.
Condition
The figure appears substantially complete, including both wings, head, torso, arms and the object held in front. The painted surface is heavily worn and abraded, although areas of colour remain. The carving itself appears generally intact in the photograph.
Interpretation
This figure belongs to the group of carved angels attached to the South Aisle ceiling timbers. Its attribute may help distinguish its iconographic role from SA1-E1 and SA1-E2, but the present photograph does not justify a more specific identification.
