Description
Winged angel on the north side of SA1, holding a heraldic shield. The figure has outstretched wings and a frontal head and torso. Surviving painted decoration remains on the figure and shield.
Heraldry
The shield bears a prominent saltire on a contrasting field. The form of the charge is clearly visible in the present photograph, but no attribution to a particular family or individual is made here.
Condition
The carving appears substantially intact in this view, including the head, torso, wings and shield. Painted decoration survives in several areas, with visible surface wear, loss and abrasion. This is a photographic condition note only, not a conservation assessment.
Interpretation
One of the carved angel figures associated with SA1. Its heraldic shield, bearing a saltire, is a principal identifying feature. Any heraldic attribution should remain open pending comparison with the other ceiling figures and further research.
Location / numbering
SA1-N = South Aisle, compartment 1, north side figure. In the SA1 compartment plan this figure is recorded on the north side of the compartment.
Notes
Compare with the other heraldic angel figures in SA1. The enhanced image is a derivative working/display image; the unaltered SA1-N.jpg remains the evidential master. Catalogue wording may be revised as measurements, conservation information and identifications become available.
