Description
Carved half-length figure set in the north-east corner of SA1. The youthful frontal figure wears a blue-green garment and holds a long curved scroll diagonally across the body. Traces of painted decoration survive on the face, hair, clothing and scroll.
Heraldry
Not applicable. The figure carries an inscribed scroll rather than a heraldic shield. Dark lettering survives, but cannot be read with confidence from the present photograph.
Condition
The carving appears substantially intact. There is considerable wear, loss and abrasion of the painted surface, particularly on the garment and scroll. This is a photographic condition note only, not a conservation assessment.
Interpretation
This corner figure differs from the principal winged, shield-bearing angels on the east side of SA1. Its inscribed scroll may help identify the figure or its role in the decorative scheme; identification should remain open until the lettering is documented more clearly.
Location / numbering
SA1-NE = South Aisle, compartment 1, north-east corner figure. The designation NE records its corner position rather than placing it in the numbered east-side sequence E1, E2 and E3.
Notes
Priority for further recording is a sharper close-up of the scroll, preferably from more than one angle and under varied or oblique lighting. SA1-NE-enh.png is a derivative working/display image; the unaltered SA1-NE.jpg remains the evidential master.
