Description

A carved wooden angel with long dark hair and spread feathered wings holds a large pointed shield. The pale robe has vertical folds and a collar retaining red and grey-blue paint. The shield is quartered: the upper-left and lower-right quarters show a pale chevron between three small, comb-like devices on a dark ground; the other two quarters have a pale ground patterned with dark ermine markings. The hands overlap the shield’s lower sides.

Heraldry

Tentative blazon: Argent, two chevrons between three roundels Gules.

In plain English: A pale or silver field bearing two red chevrons between three red roundels, two above and one below. This reading is provisional because extensive paint loss and abrasion have made parts of the design indistinct. No identification is proposed.

Identification: RCHME: Quarterly (1+4) Sable, a chevron between three lilies (or bells) argent (2+3) Ermine ? originally for Webb; Buckeridge: Quarterly 1 and 4 Sable a chevron ermine between three wool cards or 2 and 3 Ermine.

Condition

Much of the painted design remains readable, although the robe, collar, hands and shield show scattered surface losses and abrasion. Wear is particularly evident along the shield’s central division and towards its lower point, where a circular hole is visible. The wings retain clear feather carving but have chipped edges and local losses near their inner ends; a damaged area is conspicuous on the wing to the viewer’s right. Small circular fixing points are also visible. The face and hair retain comparatively clear painted detail.
