Description
A carved and painted half-length angel with outspread wings, short dark hair and a red garment. The angel faces forward with the head tilted slightly upward and supports a rounded shield with both hands. The wings retain a dark grey-blue finish, while traces of flesh colour and red pigment survive on the face and clothing.
Heraldry
Tentative blazon: Gules, two chevrons between three annulets Argent.
In plain English: A red field bearing two white or silver chevrons between three white or silver rings, two above and one below.
The two chevrons and the annulets at upper right and below are visible. The corresponding upper-left annulet is not clearly preserved and is inferred from the conventional arrangement; the reading is therefore provisional. No identification is proposed.
Condition
The carving is substantially complete, although the wing surfaces contain several holes and small losses. The painted decoration is heavily worn, flaked and abraded on the face, garment, wings and shield. A pronounced vertical split runs through the centre of the shield and lower body. The heraldic design remains partly legible: both chevrons and two annulets can be seen, but the upper-left area is especially indistinct. Further cracking, surface loss and minor damage are consistent with age.
