Description
A carved angel with dark, shoulder-length hair and outspread feathered wings holds a shield against its body. The face has strongly painted eyes and eyebrows, with traces of red on the lips. A blue-grey collar sits above a red robe. The red shield bears a pale gold chevron between three spoked wheels, two above and one below. The angel’s hands curve around the lower sides of the shield.

The two chevrons and the annulets at upper right and below are visible. The corresponding upper-left annulet is not clearly preserved and is inferred from the conventional arrangement; the reading is therefore provisional.

Condition
The figure retains much of its painted design, although scattered losses affect the face, hair, robe, hands and shield. A vertical crack runs down the centre of the shield, through the chevron and lower wheel. The wings have splits and chipped feather edges, with particularly conspicuous damage near the inner lower part of the wing on the viewer’s right. Small holes and visible fixings occur in both wings. The bottom edge of the figure is worn and chipped.
