Description
A carved and painted angel shown frontally, with long dark hair and widely extended wings. The carefully modelled feathers retain pale colouring with darker internal detail. The angel wears a light-coloured garment and holds a large pointed shield in both hands.
Heraldry
Provisional blazon: Quarterly, a repeated arrangement of horizontal bands Gules, Ermine and Azure.
In plain English, the shield is divided into four quarters, each containing bands of red, white patterned with black ermine marks, and blue.
Considerable paint loss makes the precise order and number of the bands uncertain. Some pale forms in the coloured areas may be surviving charges, but they are insufficiently clear to blazon confidently. The arms should therefore remain unidentified unless corroborating evidence is found.
Condition
The figure is substantially complete and unusually well preserved. The face, hair, hands, wings and shield remain clearly defined, and significant areas of original colouring survive. There is a vertical split through the neck, body and centre of the shield, together with widespread surface abrasion and flaking paint. The heraldry has suffered heavier losses in places, but its quartering, principal colours and ermine pattern remain legible.
