Description
A carved and painted angel shown frontally, with dark feathered wings spread horizontally. The figure has shoulder-length dark hair and gazes slightly upwards. It wears a red garment with a pale central area and holds a pointed heraldic shield in both hands.
Heraldry
Blazon: Or, two bars Sable.
In plain English, a gold shield bearing two horizontal black bands.
The surviving design is clear, although extensive wear has reduced the original brightness of both the gold ground and the black bars. No identification with a particular family should be attempted without supporting evidence.
Condition
The carving is substantially complete, including the face, wings, hands and shield. There is widespread abrasion, surface dirt and loss of painted decoration. Numerous small holes are visible, particularly in the wings and surrounding timber, probably caused by historic wood-boring insects. A vertical split runs through the centre of the figure and shield. Despite these losses, the angel’s form and the principal heraldic design remain readily legible.
