Description
A carved and painted angel shown frontally, with short dark hair and small folded wings visible on either side of the head. The figure wears a pale garment with red and gold decoration and a circular ornament at the neck. Both hands support a large pointed shield.
Heraldry
Provisional blazon: Gules, in chief two billets Or; the remainder of the shield indistinct.
In plain English, the shield has a red ground with two upright gold rectangular shapes in its upper part.
Severe paint loss towards the base makes it impossible to determine whether the original design included further charges. The visible rectangles may be billets, but the blazon must remain provisional and the arms should not presently be assigned to a family.
Condition
The figure is substantially complete, with the face, hands, small wings and shield surviving. Considerable original colour remains, particularly the red ground and two pale-gold charges on the shield. The painted surface is extensively abraded and flaking, most severely over the lower half of the shield. There are splits through the figure and shield, together with numerous small holes from probable historic wood-boring insect activity. The carving remains readily understandable, but the complete heraldic design can no longer be recovered with confidence.
