Description
A carved and painted half-length figure shown frontally, with short dark hair or a close-fitting headdress and a dark, hooded garment. No wings are clearly visible. The figure holds a large pointed heraldic shield in both hands.
Heraldry
Blazon: Barry of six Argent and Sable.
In plain English, the shield is divided into six alternating horizontal bands of white or silver and black.
The arrangement is clearly legible, although the surfaces are worn and discoloured. No identification with a particular family should be proposed without corroborating historical or heraldic evidence.
Condition
The carving is substantially complete, including the face, body, hands and shield. Much of the painted decoration has been lost from the face and garment, with widespread abrasion, staining and local flaking. The shield is comparatively well preserved, although its bands are scratched and worn and a vertical split runs through its centre. Despite these losses, the figure and heraldic design remain readily legible.
