Description

A carved angel with dark, shoulder-length hair and outspread feathered wings holds a pointed shield. Its face retains clearly painted eyes, arched eyebrows and red lips. The robe is pale gold with a blue collar, and both hands grasp the shield’s lower sides. On a dark background, the shield displays a pale chevron patterned with black ermine markings, between three gold comb-like devices, two above and one below. Each device has upright teeth or rods crossed by diagonal bars.

Heraldry

Blazon: Provisionally, on a dark field, a chevron Ermine between three unidentified charges, two in chief and one in base. The field’s tincture and the identity and tinctures of the surrounding charges remain uncertain.

Plain English: A dark shield bears an inverted V-shaped band of white ermine fur, represented by black ermine-tail marks. Three similar objects surround the band: two above it and one below. Each appears to comprise a group of upright elements joined by diagonal bars.

Identification: RCHME: Sable, a chevron ermine between three clarion or hurdles (or gates) argent; Buckeridge: Sable a chevron ermine between three wool cards or.

Condition

Much of the painted design survives clearly, including the facial features and shield’s principal details. Scattered paint losses affect the hair, chin, robe and hands. A narrow vertical crack runs down the shield’s centre, with additional fine cracking near its upper edge. The lower gold device is worn, and small losses occur around the shield point. Both wings retain clear feather carving but show splits, chipped edges and small holes, particularly near their inner ends and outer tips. Recessed fixings are visible on both arms.
