Description

A carved angel with dark, shoulder-length hair and raised wings holds a shield against a blue-green robe. The wings have overlapping rows of feathers. The shield has a dark background with two broad, pale gold horizontal bands and three pale gold roundels arranged across the top. The angel’s hands grip the sides of the shield.

Heraldry

Provisional blazon: Barry Sable and Argent, in chief three roundels Argent.

In plain English: A shield of alternating black and white or silver horizontal bands, with three white or silver roundels across the top. The alternating bands and three roundels are clear, but abrasion and the lower edge of the shield make the original number of bars uncertain. The tinctures are inferred from the surviving dark and pale paint.

Identification: RCHME: Sable, two bars argent and in chief three plates, for Hungerford; Buckeridge: Sable, two bars argent and in chief three plates.

Condition

The face is heavily worn, with substantial losses around the nose and one eye, although traces of the painted mouth remain. A vertical split runs through the centre of the shield, crossing the middle roundel and the horizontal bands. Paint is missing in several places, particularly towards the shield’s point. The wings have cracks, chipped edges and areas of exposed wood, especially beside the head on the right of the photograph. Fine cobwebs are also visible around the head and wings.
