Description
A carved angel with dark, curled hair and widely spread wings holds a shield against its body. The wings have overlapping rows of feathers, with traces of pale gold colouring. The face looks upwards, and a reddish collar borders the dark robe. Both hands clasp the lower sides of the shield, which displays a broad red chevron on a pale cream background, surrounded by a dark border. No ermine markings are visible.

Condition
The carving retains clear facial features, hands and feather detail, but the painted surfaces are worn. Pale patches are particularly noticeable around the chin and on the outer part of the wing on the left of the photograph. The shield has scattered paint losses and a fine vertical crack through its upper field and chevron. A deeper split runs down the arm on the right of the photograph towards the hand. Several feather tips are chipped, and small holes and fixing points remain visible.
