Description
A carved and painted half-length angel with outspread wings, dark hair and a forward-facing head. The figure wears a dark garment and holds a pointed shield before the body. The shield is divided into alternating dark and pale horizontal bands, with three pale roundels arranged across the uppermost dark band.
Heraldry
Provisional blazon: Barry Sable and Argent, in chief three roundels Argent.
In plain English: A shield of alternating black and white or silver horizontal bands, with three white or silver roundels across the top.
The alternating bands and three roundels are clear, but abrasion and the lower edge of the shield make the original number of bars uncertain. The tinctures are inferred from the surviving dark and pale paint. No identification is proposed.
Condition
The carving is substantially complete, including the wings, hands and shield. The face is heavily abraded and has lost much of its painted detail. Numerous small holes and areas of surface loss affect the head, wings and surrounding timber. The shield remains broadly legible, though its bands are worn and discoloured and the roundels have uneven surfaces. Traces of red and ochre colouring survive on the wing feathers.Description
