Description
A carved figure with dark, curled hair wears a blue-green robe with a pale, turned-out collar. Both hands hold the sides of a long shield, and the robe has clearly carved folds across the chest and sleeves. No wings are visible. The shield retains a broad dark diagonal area against a pale background, with a pale crescent near its upper-left portion. A scalloped edge is visible along part of the dark area, but paint loss makes the complete heraldic design difficult to establish.
Heraldry
Provisional blazon: Argent, a bend Sable.
In plain English: A white or silver shield bearing a broad black diagonal band. The broad diagonal charge is recognisable, but its edges and surviving colour are heavily worn. The tinctures are therefore provisional.
Identification: RCHME: Argent, a bend of engrailed sable (a – or at the top of the bend?); Buckeridge: Argent a bend engrailed sable a crescent for difference of the First RADCLIFFE.
Condition
Paint is missing from several parts of the face, particularly around the eye on the left of the photograph, the nose and the chin. The shield has extensive losses exposing brown wood within the dark painted area, while its lower portion is heavily worn. Fine cracks and chipped edges are visible, especially towards the shield’s point. The hands retain distinct finger detail despite surface wear. Cobwebs extend across the face, robe and shield.
